Reinventing the wheel :-P

By Mario Voigt, 22 August, 2021

Hi folks,

this weekend i experimented with another set of configurations and adjustments to make some custom soap car parts. I've been partially successful. At least after re-modeling the wheel by reducing the outer diameter i was able to print one full example part with working dimensions. Previously i had trouble to mount the tire and i had to fight with adhesion (see A series of print failures (and some adjustments!)). To fix the adhesion issue i decided to buy 3DLac Plus spray to raise the stickiness and to prevent warping.

Warping, warping, warping ...

See the following photos. As you can see it sticked reeeeally well - too well! As a result the tape just peeled off from the MDF wood platform.  So it just generated the next problem and the warping was still present. I removed the blue tape and printed directly on MDF (with additional 3DLac Plus). But also after printing on MDF with spray the warping occured (and after removing the part i also removed some MDF flakes, which means i would destroy the print bed over time in case of multiple repeats). There are just too much forces. I think the only solution will be a heated bed (no option yet) or to add some 6~8mm glass plate on top of the recent MDF surface.

The final result - the broken wheel

Having huge warping i still finished one wheel part (left photo). Mounting the tire was easy. Reaching my home i searched for my bike air pump. I pumped up to 0.5 bar. Then it cracked. The wheel is fully stable in radial directions but not in axial one. I guess we cannot glue this to keep it safe.

ToDo's

  • Try out some glass plate with 3D Lac (raise adhesion)
  • remodel the wheel to be thicker
  • add some screws and nuts to have some counter parts at the outer diameter (should prevent cracking)

Some more observations

Trikarus is one year old now. First degenerations were checked out on all four OLED displays of MisfitTech Smart Stepper. Not sure why this happens or if we can fix this. We did not try to power off yet.
